송도신도시는 1980년대 후반 구상된 계획에 의해 바다에 매립된 도시이다. 어린시절 신도시 근방에서 자란 나는 스무 살이 되던 해 이곳으로 이사왔다. 어느날 공사가 한창인 도시 외곽에 자라난 염생식물을 발견하게 되었다. 그 식물은 이식된 흙 위에서 갯벌의 흔적을 증명하고 있었다. 그리고 어린시절 신도시 자리에 끝없이 펼쳐진 바다를 바라봤던 기억과 함께 신도시를 인간의 관념이 구현된 곳으로 바라보게 했다. 그렇게 신도시의 풍경은 가상과 현실의 층위가 혼재되어 있는 이질적인 감각으로 다가왔다. 이번 작업을 통해 이질적인 감각이 만들어 내는 환영을 사진으로 재현하고자 했다. 염생식물을 처음 발견한 장소의 2000년대 항공사진을 투명 아크릴판에 출력하였다. 그리고 이곳에서 과거에 서식하던 염생식물들을 3D 모델링으로 재현하여 식물의 흔적이 남아있는 공사현장에 아크릴판을 설치하고 빔프로젝터를 사용해 투사하였다.
The New Town of Songdo is a city buried in the sea according to a plan that was designed in the late 1980s. Growing up near the new town as a child, I moved here around the time I turned 20. One day, I found salt plants growing outside of the city where the construction was in progress. The plants were evidence of the traces of mudflats on the transplanted soil. This, along with the memory of looking out at the endless sea in the location of the new town as a child, it made me look at the new town as a place where human concepts have been embodied. In that way, the landscape of the new town came in a heterogeneous sense in which the layers of virtual and reality were mixed. I tried
to represent the illusion created in that heterogeneous sense with photographs through this work. I also printed the aerial photograph from the 2000s where the salt plants were discovered for the first time on a transparent acrylic panel. And here, the salt plants that used to live in the past were recreated through 3D modeling, the acrylic panel was installed at the construction site where the traces of plants remained, and the image was projected using a beam projector.
